The Retrograde

The Mustangs came out in control to start the game. They scored a quick 8 points which set the tone for the entire first quarter. Both teams had a hefty amount of turnovers in the first quarter. Jacob “JW” Williford was the main scorer for the Mustangs in the first quarter, He went on a 6-0 run by himself. The Cougars were down by 10 almost midway through the first quarter of play and fought back to close the gap down to a 7-point deficit to close out the quarter. The second quarter was a bit of back-and-forth action for the most part. However, the Cougars did have a small little stretch where they went on a 7-0 run and ended up taking the lead for the first time in the game with [2:43] remaining in the half. The Mustangs quickly changed the lead back in their favor as they went on a 6-0 run to open things back up. The Mustangs would head into halftime still up by 7 points. Both teams came out exchanging blows like a heavy-weight prize fight. The Cougars were cleaning house on second chance opportunities. The Mustangs also had a 10-second count that turned out to be a crucial turnover midway through the third quarter. It was Cypress Creek who was able to make a nice little run late in the quarter to once again take the lead with [1:15] remaining and ended up pushing it to a two-possession lead. The Mustangs drained a corner three to cut the lead down to one, it was Cypress Creek who led at the end of three by 1 point. 5’8” Sophomore guard Tywan Collins checks in the game at the start of the fourth quarter for the Cougars and gets a quick bucket to extend the lead, and the Cougars weren’t looking to let up from that point on. Cypress Creek continued to drive to the rim and was capitalizing every time. The Cougars had their biggest lead of the game, up by 9 points with [3:40] remaining in the game. The Mustangs weren’t looking to throw in the towel just yet, but it seemed like they couldn’t get the lead to below a 5-point deficit. Cypress Ranch then copied and pasted what the Cougars were doing and started to drive to the rim slowly chipping away at the lead. It was under 1 minute in regulation and the Cougars were up by 4 points. Cypress Ranch forces a turnover and makes them pay with a trey ball from Chase Wilson on the wing to cut it to 1. They send the Cougar's Taurus Baugh to the line where he goes 1 for 2 and makes it a 2-point game with just seconds remaining. The Mustangs quickly push the ball out and find Isaac Saavedra in the corner and he hits the game-winning trey ball and the Mustangs protect home court with a walk-off three-pointer to win 61-60. 


Prospects / Players

Josh Goodwin Jr. 6’4” G | Cypress Ranch | So. BSH20

Josh played with poise And handled the rock very well. He was able to beat his opponent off the dribble several times. He made some tough passes in the game also. He finished the game with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. He shot 5/12 from the field and 0/1 from three-point land. 


Isaac Saavedra 5’10” PG | Cypress Ranch | Jr. BSH40

Isaac hit some big-time shots in the game. One of them was from the NBA range. He was able to get some good quality paint touches where he found his teammates for some easy looks. He finished the game with a team-high 14 points. He also had 5 assists as he shot ⅝ from the floor and 4/4 from the arch.


Jacob Williford 6’4” G | Cypress Ranch | So. BSH20

Jacob was scrappy on the defensive side of the ball. He was altering shots and picking pockets. He also pushed the tempo and was blowing by opponents. He caught the ball in the corner and went baseline and tried to jam it on his opponent. He finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 blocked shot. He went 6/13 from the field and 0/3 from three-point. 


Chris Tippins 6’4” SG | Cypress Ranch | Sr. BSH80

Tippins had a slow start to the game. He hit a pair of tough mid-range jumpers in the second half of the game. He also took an opponent off the dribble for a nice flush at the rim. Finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, and 1 assist. He shot 5/10 from the field, 1/3 from three, and 2/4 from the foul line. 


Jayphon Duncan 6’1” PG | Cypress Creek | Jr. 

Jay is a speedy guard who displayed his quickness to get by opponents. He is also a really scrappy on-ball defender. It seemed like he was involved in every play no matter if it resulted in a positive or negative efficiency rating. Finished the game with 13 points, 4 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. He shot 5/9 from the field, 2/3 three, and 1/2 from the foul line. 


Ke’bari Lewis 6’1” G | Cypress Creek | Jr. BSH40

Ke’bari is back and healthy. When he got going downhill he was tough to stop. A physical scrappy defender also. He finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. He shot 4/9 from the floor, 0/3 from deep, and 2/2 from the charity stripe. 


Taurus Baugh 6’5” PF | Cypress Creek | Sr.

Taurus who was rumored to have transferred to a school in Illinois was in uniform and he came to play. He cleaned the house on the offensive glass. He was a put-back machine. He always hits his opponent with a little head fake to get them off their feet and goes up and gets an easy bucket or an and-one bucket. Very strong undersized power forward who runs the floor well. Active hands defensively and contest jumpers. Finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, and 1 assist. He shot 8/14 from the field and 4/7 from the free-throw line.
