All big sporting events such as boxing matches, MMA, and basketball, normally have good rivalries. These two teams are no exception. Over the last two years, I have witnessed multiple great games from them. Saturday was more of the same as the 17-3 (12-0 in district) Furr Brahmans took on the 19-7 (11-1 in district) Booker T. Washington Eagles. The game started off very differently than the first time around. Coach Grayson, of Booker T., elected to play pressure defense for most of this game. He also made sure that his best defender, unsigned senior G Davion Smith, would be matched up with Furr’s leading scorer, unsigned senior W Terrell Moorer. ℅ 2024 P Chris McDermott was his usual dominant self down low in the first half. The young man controlled the paint on offense and defense. He would drop 10 points and grab 8 rebounds, but his impact exceeded just numbers. Terrell Moorer still was able to muster 8 points in the first half to lead Furr. Booker T. would take a 2-point lead, 31-29, after some timely late second three-point shooting from ℅ 2024 G Odis Carter, Jr.

In the second half, both teams had guards that came out aggressively and looking to score. Booker T.’s unsigned senior G Andre Walker II played one the best games that I have witnessed from him this year. When Furr started to double down on McDermott, Andre drained multiple perimeter jumpers and finished the second half with 13 points. Furr, on the other hand, had two players that came out looking to win, unsigned seniors (W) Demetric Kindle and (G) Jacobee Giles. Giles would be in attack mode, scoring multiple layups back to back. Kindle would turn into more of a facilitator but used his size and ability to score in the paint, to give Furr a slight lead going into the fourth quarter. Just like any rivalry, things got a little chippy. Furr went to the line for multiple free throws but was unable to convert a lot of them. I also have to mention the heroic defensive job that ℅ 2024 P Waquinn Thomas displayed for Coach Lewis of Furr. Thomas single-handedly kept the Brahmans in it, while they were going through a scoring drought, by not allowing McDermott to get easy baskets at the rim. After all of the dust was settled, 32 minutes would not be enough for this game. With both teams at 63, we would head into overtime.

In the overtime period, Davion Smith would show people why he is considered one of the best perimeter defenders in the whole city. He had multiple steals and clutch layups that would give Booker T. a slight lead. With Jacobee Giles fouling out, Demetric Kindle once again got some clutch baskets. The key point of overtime was Chris McDermott shooting a 2 shot free throw, where he made the first. After missing the second, ℅ 2025 P Samuel Johnson would secure the offensive rebound and put back the layup. Booker T. would hold on for a 68-67 victory that would leave them tied for first in district play.
