Prospect Upshot: Super 16 Championship

RCS Sports Super 16 Fall Extravaganza, also known as the Fall Championships, is the only high school fall tournament south of the Red River. The Super 16 hosts 24 teams, all vying for the title. Only 16 teams make it to Sunday, hence the name. Teams can play up to 7 games over three days. The event also has a showcase division featuring 15 teams playing two games a piece.

The championship game was between two familiar foes who used to be district mates. Beaumont West Brook has dropped down from 6A to 5A. They are one of the 5A preseason favorites to make a run toward a UIL State Championship this season. Atascocita is always a powerhouse in 6A they have won a total of 5 Super 16 Championships in the past 11 seasons and also have made third-round or better playoff runs within that span as well.

Both teams were on their 6th game of the weekend for the championship game. Fatigue was a factor as both teams had hard-fought battles on Sunday to get to the title game. Here is how they got here:

Beaumont West Brook

  • Dickinson 50-43

  • St. Francis Episcopal 39-35

  • Wheatley 54-27

  • Fort Bend Marshall 31-28

  • Fort Bend Ridge Point 32-25

Atascocita

  • Cypress Ranch 46-25

  • Houston Washington 53-29

  • Katy 34-31

  • Seven Lakes 43-32

  • Good Vision Academy 45-36

The game started very slowly as neither team could get what they were looking for. The gameplay would eventually pick up quarter by quarter. In the second half of the game, Atascocita capitalized on every Bruin turnover which allowed them to push the lead ahead and eventually walk away with their 5th Super 16 Championship in 11 seasons.

Jaylen Fenner BSH80

6’5” | Sr. Atascocita

The Louisiana Tech commit scored well around the rim. He also was tough on the defensive side of the ball as well.

Adam Boyd BSH40

6’3” | Jr. Atascocita

Boyd was super active on the defensive side of the ball using his athleticism to block shots and deflect passes. He hit a big corner trey ball and had a flush in the game.

Zayson Salanoa BSH40

6’7” | Jr. Atascocita

Zaysons shot wasn’t falling so he affected the game on the glass by grabbing up every rebound in his area. He also was altering shots on the defensive end of the floor.

Jonathan Kekeochea

6’3” | Jr. Atascocita

He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time for the Eagles on both sides of the ball. He also has a really good motor and he brings his hard hat to work every time.

Elijah Garrett BSH40

6’2” | Jr. West Brook

Elijah had some moments for his Bruins. He displayed his downhill aggressiveness when attacking the rim and made some nice passes to his teammates.

Terry Satcher Jr BSH80

6’3” | Sr. West Brook

TJ was solid on both sides of the ball in the title game. His shot wasn’t falling but he still played with great energy. He made the extra pass to get his teammates going. There was no letting up in his game.

Jacob Babino

6’1” | Sr. West Brook

He was huge for them on the defensive side of the ball. He displayed quick hands and played the passing lanes he was jumping lanes like a cornerback snatching interceptions and getting deflections. He also had a couple of big blocks as well.
